Home Insurance Coverages to Consider
Every home is different, but many face a lot of similar dangers. A basic home insurance policy may include:
· Dwelling Coverage: Dwelling coverage provides compensation for damages to the physical home and its attached structures caused by fire, wind, hail, lightning, smoke, explosions, vandalism and more.
· Personal Belongings Coverage: Personal belongings coverage provides compensation for damages to your personal items caused by fire, lightning, smoke, theft, vandalism and more. You may want additional policy floaters to cover expensive items such as jewelry, furs, art and electronics.
· Personal Liability: Personal liability covers bodily injury and property damage other people may suffer on your home’s property. It can also extend to damages and injuries caused by your children or pets.
· Additional Living Expenses: In case the home is rendered uninhabitable due to a disaster, additional living expense coverage provides compensation for costs related to temporarily moving.
Be sure to ask about additional coverages available for your home insurance policy.
How Much Home Insurance Should I Have?
Your home insurance needs will change depending on your home, risk level, location and other factors. In general, you should insure your home for its total replacement cost value. This is not the amount that you paid for the home, however, or its market value. The replacement cost value of your home is how much it would take to completely rebuild the home after a disaster, including building and material costs.
If you cannot insure your home for its entire replacement cost value, you should cover at least 80% of this amount, otherwise you could have unexpected gaps in your coverage when it comes time to file a claim.

Common Home Insurance Questions
How Far in Advance Can I Buy Home Insurance?
You should have a home insurance policy by the time you’re ready to sign the dotted line. Insuring the home before you ever step foot inside can guarantee that you will be covered for an accident as soon as you move in.
How Many Home Insurance Claims Can You Make?
There is not set number on how many claims you can file on your home insurance policy. On average, insurers may be alarmed if you file more than one claim within a three-year period.
How Often Should I Change Home Insurance?
It is not recommended that homeowners switch their insurers often. Each time you do, you may see an increase in your home insurance premiums. You should check your policy every so often, however, especially if you notice unexpected changes.
